As an alternative, you can try the open source CoRD which is lighter and allows several concurrent connections (unlike Microsoft's client last I checked)

Microsoft RDC does allow multiple connections -- to different computers or even to the same computer (Terminal Server) with different user account. This feature has been available for many years.

I was going to suggest CoRD as well. Even though officially still in beta, this application is miles better that the Microsoft version which is arguably one of the worst pieces of Mac software ever created. If you don't believe me, try starting it up and opening a previously saved connection settings file, editing a few of the settings and then logging in with those saved settings. This cannot be done without quitting and restarting RDC at least once.

I would also recommend CoRD. Why waste time trimming the bloat from another application when CoRD comes bloat free out of the box?

I downloaded this yesterday, tried to do this today. The package, Office2011_en_rdc.pkg, is not part of the download.

I've been using the Microsoft RDC that you can download from Microsoft. http://www.microsoft.com/mac/remote-desktop-client
As a web application developer I have to connect to Windows servers a lot. This lets me connect to multiple servers at a time, lets me save profiles per server and per login type. I am curious to know if the RDC that comes with Office is different than the one you can just download from MS? Anyone know?

As the hint says, Office2011_en_rdc.pkg is located inside of RDC Installer.pkg. Right click on RDC Installer.pkg in the dmg you downloaded and choose 'Show Package Contents.' As far as I know, it's the same RDC included with MS office. You can save shortcuts for each server/user configuration you want; I keep mine in a folder on the dock for easy access. You might want to look into the free CoRD application mentioned by some other commenters, as it has a 'library' approach to the organization of such profiles.

how is this different from downloading RDC2.1_ALL.dmg directly at http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads?pid=Mactopia_RDC&fid=68346E0D-44D3-4065-99BB-B664B27EE1F0#viewer ???

It requires *part* of that file. If you run the default installer, you get a bunch of extra bloat added to your system. Read the hint for more details.

ok, thanks, I get it now. however, it's not clear to me how to remove the 'bloat' once you already installed RDC the classical way. anyway the autoupdater seems to run only while the RDC is running and I have not seen any 'annoying popups' yet. the dock app seems to be relevant only during install process. not sure about the MERP apps, but they did not show up in the process list on my system.
